We set out on an unforgettable journey to Gornergrat, one of the most breathtaking mountain destinations in Switzerland.

Located in Valais, just east of Zermatt, this stunning alpine peak offers panoramic views, exciting hikes, and a train ride like no other!

Getting to Gornergrat: The Scenic Train Ride

The best way to reach Gornergrat is by riding the Gornergrat Bahn, the highest open-air railway in Europe. Running 365 days a year, this train departs from Zermatt and reaches the summit in just 33 minutes. For the best views of the Matterhorn, we grabbed a seat on the right side of the train and watched the stunning scenery unfold.

Gornergrat's Spectacular Views

Standing at an elevation of 3,089 meters (10,134 feet), Gornergrat offers jaw-dropping views of the Matterhorn, Gorner Glacier (the second-largest glacier in the Alps), and Dufourspitze (Switzerland's highest peak). The 3100 Kulm Hotel, Europe's highest-altitude hotel, sits here, offering accommodation with an unbeatable view!

Ticket Prices and Discounts

• One-way ticket (Zermatt to Gornergrat): 66 CHF (June - August)

• Return ticket: 132 CHF

• Discounts: 50% off with a Swiss Travel Pass or Half Fare Card (no discounts for Eurailpass holders)

For those spending more time in Zermatt, the Peak Pass provides unlimited train and lift access to Gornergrat, Glacier Paradise, and Rothorn. A 2-day pass costs 248 CHF in the summer.

Priority Boarding: Worth It?

For an extra 5 CHF, we could board first and guarantee a seat on the right side for the best Matterhorn views. If you're visiting during peak times, it might be worth it. Otherwise, arriving early should secure a good seat.

What to Do at Gornergrat

Once we stepped off the train, we instantly felt the high-altitude effects—a bit of dizziness and shortness of breath. But the view was worth it!

• Terrace Views: The first observation point offers a direct view of the Matterhorn.

• 3100 Kulm Hotel: A great spot for food, souvenirs, and restrooms.

• Scenic Loop Hike: A short 0.4 km walk with stunning glacier and mountain views.

Hiking from Gornergrat to Riffelsee

Instead of taking the train back, we decided to hike downhill to Riffelsee, one of the most beautiful lakes in the Alps.

• Distance: 2 km (1.2 miles)

• Time: 35 minutes (plus photo stops!)

The trail winds downhill with incredible Matterhorn views. If you're lucky, you might see the Matterhorn's reflection in the lake!

Continuing to Riffelberg

From Riffelsee, we had two options:

1. Shorter Route (Swiss Topwalk Trail #23) – 2 km, ~30 minutes

2. Longer Route (Riffelseeweg Trail #21) – 3 km, ~50 minutes

Both trails offer panoramic mountain views, but we chose the shorter route to Riffelberg Station.

Returning to Zermatt

At Riffelberg, we had three ways to get back to Zermatt:

• Hiking (2 more hours)

• Gornergrat Railway (42 CHF)

• Riffelberg Express Cable Car (39.50 CHF)

We chose the cable car for a different perspective on the way down.

Bonus: Add Glacier Paradise

For a full adventure, visit Matterhorn Glacier Paradise on the same day! Instead of returning to Zermatt first, take the cable car from Riffelberg to Glacier Paradise via Furi.
