Lykkers, we just had the most inspiring journey through Sydney’s architectural gems, and we can’t wait to share it with you.
You’ll be blown away by how the city blends cutting-edge modern designs with rich historical structures. Come along as we dive into the heart of this stunning metropolis!
Of course, no architectural tour of Sydney is complete without visiting the iconic Sydney Opera House. Designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, this UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the most photographed buildings in the world. We marveled at its sail-like structures, which shimmer in the sunlight by Sydney Harbour.
Visitors can take a guided tour to explore its interiors and learn about its history. Tours run daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Tickets for the tour are around AUD $43 for adults and AUD $23 for children. You can also attend performances here, with ticket prices varying depending on the show, ranging from AUD $50 to over AUD $200.
Practical tip: Make sure to book your tour online in advance, as they tend to sell out quickly, especially during peak tourist seasons.
Another architectural marvel we loved is the Queen Victoria Building (QVB). Built in the late 19th century, this grand Romanesque-style building has been transformed into a luxury shopping destination while retaining its old-world charm. The stained glass windows, mosaic floors, and towering domes make it a sight to behold.
Even if shopping isn’t on your agenda, walking through the QVB is an experience in itself. It’s open daily from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with extended hours until 9:00 PM on Thursdays for late-night shoppers. Entrance is free, but with the allure of designer shops and unique boutiques, you might want to set aside a budget for some purchases!
Practical tip: Visit early in the morning if you want to admire the building’s beauty without the crowd.
Sydney’s Royal Botanic Garden is an oasis of greenery nestled next to the city’s towering skyscrapers. While not a traditional building, the design of this space, with its sweeping lawns, themed gardens, and Art Deco features, offers a relaxing contrast to Sydney’s modern architectural landmarks.
Entry is free, and the gardens are open daily from 7:00 AM to 6:30 PM, giving you plenty of time to explore the sculptures, ponds, and panoramic views of Sydney Harbour and the city skyline.
Practical tip: Don’t miss Mrs. Macquarie’s Chair for one of the best photo opportunities of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge.
For a glimpse into Sydney’s future, we visited Barangaroo, an exciting new urban development along the waterfront. This area features striking contemporary designs, including high-rise buildings with eco-friendly architecture and public spaces that combine art and nature.
Barangaroo Reserve is a highlight, with its landscaped walking paths and stunning views. It’s open 24/7, and entry is free. There are also a variety of restaurants and cafes, where you can grab a bite while enjoying the cutting-edge designs.
Practical tip: Visit during sunset for stunning views of the city and harbor as the lights begin to twinkle across the skyline.
After a day of exploring, we stayed at The Old Clare Hotel, a boutique hotel located near the Central Park precinct, which is known for its striking architecture and vertical gardens. The hotel blends heritage-listed features with modern design, giving it a unique character that reflects Sydney’s mix of old and new.
Room rates start from around AUD $300 per night, offering luxury and comfort with a dash of history. We loved its rooftop pool and trendy bar, perfect for unwinding after a day of sightseeing.
Practical tip: If you're staying here, take a walk around the Central Park Mall and admire the award-winning sustainable architecture nearby.
Sydney’s architecture is a beautiful blend of tradition and innovation, and we can't wait for you to experience it for yourself!
