The Maldives boasts a stunning coral landscape and vibrant marine life. Unfortunately, many of the reefs were on the brink of death due to sea warming, especially during El Niño in 1998. However, there have been encouraging signs of recovery in recent years.

This reef is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and includes 160 species of soft and hard corals, as well as 500 species of fish. However, many of the reefs have been destroyed due to natural and man-made causes, highlighting the urgent need to protect this fragile ecosystem.

1. Clavelina Lepadiformis

This transparent marine organism resembles a light bulb, with visible yellow and white organs. Sea squirts are shaped like plants and can be found in oceans worldwide, from shallow waters to depths of thousands of meters. They typically grow in loose clusters and can reach up to 4cm in length, with vigorous growth in winter and revival in summer.

2. Spirobranchus Giganteus

These colorful worms can be found in tropical oceans around the world and feature orange, yellow, blue, and white spirals. The spirals are actually high-density respiratory structures, as these worms do not have specific limbs for locomotion and swimming outside their tubes.

3. Plerogyra Sinuosa

Bubble coral is stunning to behold, expanding and unfolding like bubbles, pearls, or grapes in the presence of light. These corals have a hard skeleton, earning them their name. At night, they stretch out anemone-like tentacles to hunt, featuring toxic stinging cells that make them fragile and challenging to handle or collect.
